Sad News For Crisp Fans
Golden Wonder, one of the great names of the British snack food industry, has collapsed into administration.
Golden Wonder were the first company to introduce flavoured crisps back in 1962 (cheese and onion)
Up to 850 jobs at the firm, based in Market Harborough, Leics, are at risk
Golden Wonder was founded by an enterprising Edinburgh baker who starting making potato crisps after finishing his morning's work, and has been at the forefront of most crisp developments since then, until its luck run out yesterday.
This Great British Company was killed of by a combination of its competition and the supermarkets such as tesco's drive for cheaper products from suppliers
The company faced stiff competition from the giant Walkers Snack Foods owned and backed by the world's biggest snack food company the $25bn American company PepsiCo which control over 50% of the snack food market which is worth over £2bn a year.
"It's tremendously sad. Golden Wonder is a wonderful brand name that's been around since the 1940s," said Steve Chandler, the director general of the Snack, Nut and Crisp Manufacturers' Association.
The company's brands, including Wheat Crunchies, Ringo's and Nik Naks, as well as Golden Wonder, Will be dearly missed, leaving the Public with less variety than ever before.
Eat what you can before there gone!!
